Tried the PS5 this weekend for the first time. I wasn't very impressed. I tried Matrix Awakens demo - but it was only 30 fps even with res 1920x1080. It did look nice, but I'm pretty sure my RTX 3090 can do that so much better, lol. Dirt 5 was nice, at least 60 fps - but not sure it looked better than other recent PC racing games. The PS5 version of AstroBot did impress me - not that it's that technically demanding, but everything just looked great and was fun - the content felt fresh and new. After seeing the PS5, I'm not expecting much more than a GTX 1080 (Ti) powered PC, but if Sony can do magic content like AstroBot, then that's fine with me. The PS5 is also very big and I'm not a great fan of the design, would really be nice with a smaller version... Surely the PS5 is a giant monster compared to the insect-like phone gpu in Quest 2. I bet we're waiting for the PSVR2 not due to the hardware, but due to the software - Sony needs some awesome VR PS5 games/content to launch the PSVR2, and games take a very long time to make... Hardware is the easy stuff, the software is the difficult stuff... It's not as powerful as a 1080Ti. It's closest to an AMD 5700XT which would be in the ballpark of a 2070 for Nvidia comparison...without Nvidia's Tech. Console optimization allows for a lot of trickery but not enough to be comparable to a 3090 for monitor gaming...not even close. My PC curb stomps all my PS5 games on performance. The thing is with PC vs PS5 comparison is how good the port is for direct comparisons. Some games perform worse on PC because they did a lazy port. Others, perform much better. That's another benefit to the locked console system, everything is ensured to perform well on that hardware. But, this effects the graphics. The ray tracing is very minor compared to what we see on a 3090 and usually view distances are shorter and distant lods are lower quality etc. Up close it's hard to tell the difference. Also some of the Sony exclusive titles that aren't available on PC have such good art and are comparable to some of the best looking PC games. Returnal for example. I've been playing Gran Turismo 7 with my Logitech G29 racing wheel a good bit and while it looks worse than Forza 4 does, it's still pretty damn good looking. That said, yes Foveated Rendering would be a game changer if they have it working well. VR performance is still lackluster overall and something like that would be a huge swing. We shall see.

Got the PS5 installed last night - my wife accuses me for filling the house with electronics using much electricity, but I think I found a good (=hidden) spot for the PS5 :-) And of course it does not use that much power, but hard to win emotional arguments, lol.
Tried the new Astrobot, and got the PS5 set for good looks, not performance, not sure it matters for AstroBot - got solid 60 fps, but the plasma only goes to 1080p in 60 Hz. The game did look great, no jaggies, great colors.
God of War Ragnarok with a Metascore of 94 is right now the highest ranking exclusive PS5 game. I did choose good looks and not performance in the settings, but that seemed to lock the game in 30 fps, while performance is 60 fps. Graphics looked the same, but I'm only using 1080p and not even 120 fps. It did look like one of the nicer PC games, but didn't exactly blow my mind so far.
So far PS5 Astrobot impressed me the most.
And the prices in the store - many games at $80-100, at least when converted to my currency, did fuel my Uncle Scrooge mindset, lol. Call of the Mountain for PSVR2 is $75 in the store, but can see US price is $60, so I get to pay $15 more. I don't recall ever having seen any VR game priced at $75, but ok - Alyx does cost $65 in my currency over here. Of course Call of the Mountain may be Alyx class, so maybe $75 is fine. I do fear that the very high prices also in the PSVR2 part of the store may limit adoption - I would think that PS5 owners have smaller wallets than PC enthusiasts... Btw, I'm biased, 2D pancakes have no value to me, paying more than $10 for Diablo4 seems way too much ;-)
Also games taking up 150 - 200 GB on a console with only 650GB free space, not sure what Sony is drinking. I was close to not installing Ragnarok due to the 180GB of lost space. Was checking for a 4TB NVMe, and then some dudes say the drive must have a heatsink, sigh - feels like more ... work. Maybe easier just addind an external 4TB SSD??
Hard to estimate raw gpu power when I can't use 4K res or 120 fps, but I guess my first impressions are positive.
Didn't like the user interface much, feels cluncky. Wasn't that easy finding the button to turn the PS5 off.
Also seems I can't turn off the lights when the PS5 is on...

GPU power is around a RX 5700 XT or RTX 2070 Super.
Ragnarok looks nice but it's not the best looking PS5 game. It's one of my favorite game series though.
You notice the difference more on a 4K screen between resolution and Performance modes. With 1080p, there's probably little difference. On my TV, the resolution mode looks sharper and clearer.

I do like the old Viking stuff - that's kinda part of my culture here in Scandinavia, and Ragnarok does have impressive npcs. Fun to see Thor and Odin :-)
But I've been playing for 80 minutes now, basically beating the same 2-3 opponents - ok, also a bear and Thor, and it kinda feels like a chore. I expected more from a Metascore 94, and I'm not immersed, even if sitting 3 feet from the 51" plasma isn't bad, but it's still 2D - and that controller... I do like the nice plasma blacks, and some graphics are impressive. I also am not that fond of fighting - I'm using normal difficulty. Some might think it's funny getting Ragnarok without enjoying the fighting - but I could only get a PS5 by buying a bundle - and I was curious about that Metascore of 94, which is better than Alyx.
Well, Ragnarok being better than Alyx that would totally make no sense at all, lol. Also played Hubris today - so much better than Ragnarok, but like with Alyx we're comparing apples to oranges.
Ragnarok - at least for now - hasn't surprised me much, feels solid, but also feels like old-school game design, like something I've done many times before, although graphics and story are better now. Again, this is just based on the first 80 minutes, I may change my mind later :-)
Just think if we could be in Ragnarok - be the one to hold the axe and throw/swing it - that would be something. Gotta get back to Asgard's Wrath :-)
Btw, for the kids, are there any awesome and exclusive PS5 local co-op games?

So just need to check for CFI-1200, the third version of the PS5:

Just checked, I got the newest and third revision - CFI-1216A.
Seems to use 20 - 30 watts (10 - 15%) less in Astrobot, has extra heatpipes and a new mainboard:

I'm starting to like this ner* *cough!* this nice dude:
So basically the PS5 1200 has the new "Oberon Plus" 6nm processor, while the old 1000 and 1100 models have the original Oberon (non-plus) 7nm processor. This explains the reduced power draw with the 1200 model.

Resident Evil 8 Village is now 50% off, so just bought it, and PSVR2 support dlc will be free.
Since the game also is available for PS4, I suspect the PS5 version is more like an enhanced PS4 version, at least the start of the game in 2D was not very impressive. Some textures were high-res-ish though, but the hair on your wife did not look real nor impressive. Reminded me a PC game from 2015 or so, but I'm in the very start of the game. Might be a good candidate for VR... The PSVR2 trailer looked a lot better than the game I played, so maybe it improves much in the later levels...
I just reached the village (I think) and better stop playing. The game is close to ruined using a controller - I miss having hands.
I have now bought the two PSVR2 games I wanted the most: Call of the Mountain is in my PSVR2 bundle, and RE8 now just needs the PSVR2 dlc...
I'm ready, lol.
Btw, Ragnarok is getting better, also it's far better than the RE8 pancake I experienced today, but Hubris still feels so much ahead of these pancakes that there's no competition at all. Astrobot is nice too, but is a severely reduced experience without VR.

Hmmm, I wonder what Sony did to RE8 to make it shine in VR - this description feels way beyond my experience of the pancake version:
"In the non-VR version of the game it’s all quite beautiful but most players aren’t going to stop to really breathe it in. In VR, I felt like I couldn’t stop but soak up the tiny details in the environment, even when they have nothing to do with actually advancing the game. Frankly, the space is so richly detailed and interesting to look at that if you removed all the ‘game’ parts of the experience to just let people explore the castle, it would easily stand on its own as an excellent museum-type VR experience."
RE8 will be available at the PSVR2 launch in late February 2023.

It's official - PSVR2 will launch with another REALLY BIG AAA TITLE: This is a massive AAA game - and having about 3 AAA games at launch (Gran Turismo 7, Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil) is no small deal. May be the biggest VR launch in history - combining content and hardware. This is starting to look bigger than Alyx and Index - but I'm biased, nothing compares to Alyx and Half-Life. Also only Call of the Mountain is exclusive to VR, but still. EDIT: Just bought the game - this is starting to be slightly expensive in software, but found it for $50 on disc - I like having a physical copy, also installs very fast, at least much faster than my much slower download speed. Of course slightly annoying needing to have the disc in the drive.

Hmmm, one of the most important parts of the VR experience is the sound. If you have not experienced Alyx with the Index speakers, you haven't really experienced Alyx - all sound effects and music were made for the Index speakers - without them, the bass is too much or too little etc. Same with the old CV1 games - they were designed only for the CV1 headphones. But what about PSVR2? Then I checked out what Sony offered when reviewers got to test to PSVR2 Of course Sony wanted reviewers to have the very best experience. I also tried to connect some rather expensive Bluetooth headphones to the PS5, but could not get it to work, so PS5 may be picky. I do not gamble - so I just bought the same Playstation5 Pulse 3D headphones which Sony provided for the PS5 showcase/promotion as shown above: This does not exactly reduce the price of the PSVR2, but only adds about $100 or so. Now I think I'm ready

Yea i have the pulse headphones. They came in a bundle. I'm not an audiophile but I don't find them to be that impressive. Honestly my HyperX headphones sound better for around the same price. But they work.
I'm ecstatic about GT7 being in VR. I played it a ton earlier this year with my racing wheel. Will be awesome to revisit in VR.
I told you Sony was going to bring some big games. That's the one area they don't disappoint.

But they work. I'm ecstatic about GT7 being in VR. I played it a ton earlier this year with my racing wheel. Will be awesome to revisit in VR. I told you Sony was going to bring some big games. That's the one area they don't disappoint. Agreed, GT7 VR is indeed a massive surprise, being a true Playstation exclusive. So the big PSVR2 launch games are: Horizon - Call of the Mountain Gran Turismo 7 Resident Evil 8 (Village) - and one month later Resident Evil 4 (the high-end version) Then we're getting several other multi-platform titles (=available for Quest and/or PCVR) This is giant launch package. Maybe PSVR2 pre-orders have been fewer than Sony expected, but to many it may be expensive. Also many of the game are expensive too if you miss the sales. I was wondering if this have gotten Sony to focus on GT7 VR. Also GT7 may be easy to port, like F1 22 and other pancake racing games - as you don't need special enhancements for the VR controllers. I'm more wondering about the performance and potentially blurry peripheral rendering due to the foveated rendering - if those potential issues do not really exist, PSVR2 could be another quantum jump for VR. Maybe... Also need to see my glasses working - but the dude from CNET had gigantic-ish glasses and no issues. There's hope (but did check that out thoroughly before ordering, glasses usually work fine with Tobii eyetracking). Btw, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge has high priority to me too - it was the one that got away :-) Same for Jurassic World Aftermath - although I do worry the polygon count and number of npcs/opponents have been designed for what a ultra-weak phone gpu can handle. There's a big difference designing VR games ground-up for high-end systems or for phone processors, sure you can polish the surfaces with better textures, reflections and add dynamic lighting - but that's just surfaces and does not change the main content. For the headphones, I just want what the devs are using - to be sure I get the sound the devs intended. I found that Alyx music and sound effects can sound very different using Index speakers or other headphones - even to an extent where I stopped liking the music when using other headphones (too much or too little bass, not the right frequency distributions etc). Same with games made for the Rift CV1 headphones (like Lone Echo and Asgard's Wrath, especially the music and voices). Latency may be an issue with wireless headphones though - I hope Sony got that one under control. Pulse 3D seem rather clunky, I do wonder if Sony is designing some special headphones for the PSVR2 to be revealed later...
