I was not impressed, and the game wanted me to upgrade my video card driver (giving me an error everytime I start the game) - I don't do that for just one game, especially not a racing game. The game did work, but was very blurry - it helped reducing TAA and increasing sharpening. Performance wasn't very good, but I forced ultra settings and SteamVR res 200%. I've already refunded, I have several racing games I like better, like DiRT 1-2 and Project Cars 1-3. I have racing games from 2017 looking and performing better. If I pay about $65 for a game and it takes up about 50 GB, then I expect graphics looking a lot better. I noticed the latest Nvidia driver when I got it yesterday mentioned optimizations for F1 2022. I always grab the latest Nvidia release driver when it comes out. This is day 1 though at least for the retail release, I would think some of this will get worked out. Have not tried it myself though, maybe next week if I can make the time. I have seen mentioned about the blur, but also at the same time mentioned performance was ok. I will give it a few days for the dust to settle, not in a big hurry really. Yeah Ultra settings with 200% resolution might be a little steep for this brand new sim. Still enjoying my DCS Apache training with my new Virpil Collective, hard to tear myself away.

Still enjoying my DCS Apache training with my new Virpil Collective, hard to tear myself away. I did start with SteamVR res 200% and VR Ultra in-game settings - performance was nice 90 fps. But it was very blurry. Then I started increasing res to 400% and down to 300%, all god rays etc, but seems the game set res back to res 200%, strange, but did not spend too much time checking that out. After starting toying with more settings, performance was no longer solid 90 fps - and the game still did not look very good. Btw, start the game in 2D, when starting for the first time - I found it close to impossible to perform the first EA log-in wearing the hmd. Fueled my hypertension somewhat, lol. Really dislike being forced to remove the hmd to log-in. wMetascore is not 82 based on 20 reviews, but of course 2D reviews - 82 isn't bad. I don't think it's a bad game - the VR part just feels like a cheap mod - not like Star Wars Squadrons where I was really blown away. For now I'm not sure F1 22 is worth more than $10 - 20 to me. Textures, lighting, shadows - nothing felt impressive to me, but was not bad either - just kinda average. Love to hear what you think! I can always buy it again

Of course I did not use the recommended driver, if you get nice image quality and solid 90 fps I'll reconsider getting the game again.
Also this is just another racing game to me, I don't care much for F1 - so graphics and performance really need to impress me, I don't know any of the drivers and do not care about realism when driving - I prefer Sega's OutRun, lol.
So I'm biased ;-)

Yea, I've been kind of watching it with a skeptical eye. User reviews for it aren't great so far. I'm also more of a Rally fan than a F1 fan and was more looking forward to the new WRC game since codemasters obtained the official WRC license again. Since Codemasters made this...kind of concerning. That said, F1 as a motorsport is much much more popular than Rally so I hope they get it patched up into a good state for the fans sake.

Well crap I guess I am going to need to drag my wheel and pedal setup out and give this a fair try soon. Or maybe I should wait till after the first patch LOL. Will be interesting to see on that first patch, how much attention to VR it will get. It was such a huge deal that EA included native VR support in this highly successful franchise. VR needs to succeed in it as well. I am sure many other AAA game developers will be watching this with interest.

This is currently the review with most positive votes (1,200) on Steam right now:
"EA ruins every franchise they touch. They ruined Codemaster's F1. You can't use Fanatec gear without constant stuttering, VR is awful, and it looks like you're having a seizure in the car. F1 Life is meant to take more of your money. They didn't let you play the game at launch when you paid extra for that sole purpose. They removed Jeff and Claire, but at least we can buy custom lamps and couches. Because that is what we want in a F1 Game, paid interior design. Don't buy this game. I'm being serious. Get F1 2020 and mod the new liveries and drivers into it. It isn't hard. Boycott EA until they learn to make a competent game.
Edit: A few bugs have been fixed, but this still doesn't take away from the fact I paid extra for early access that I could not play. And for the people saying I should've refunded it, I spent an hour and a half trying to fix things in-game and didn't realize I went over 2 hours. Now I'm stuck with it O.o
Edit 2: The audio popping and cutting out can be somewhat alleviated by disabling every output and input device you have except the ones you are using, and the visual stuttering can be slightly helped by plugging your pedals directly into your wheelbase, although it was difficult for me to do as I had to completely disassemble the lower part of my rig to do so. My PC specs can run VR perfectly fine on paper, but the awful optimization and tracking has made my experiences with VR so far a nauseous mess. I play iRacing perfectly fine on Max settings 100+ FPS, so F1 22 being like this is unexcusable. F1 Life is a bleak, greedy addition, and even then they have very little content for it. Overall, while I'm not as negative as my original review, this game is still pathetic when compared to earlier titles such as F1 2021 and 2020 in terms of new content and launch stability"
For being AAA and having VR support I do want to support the game, but while Hitman 3 VR had issues, Hitman 3 VR does have great quality - while I'm still not convinced about F1 22.

Yeah like I say I will see for myself how it is, whenever I get around to hooking up my wheel and pedals. May be after the first patch though lol. Will see how I feel next week and what mood I am in. I am really kind of laser focused on continuing my learning of the DCS Apache chopper.

Like you said, my old xbox controller worked perfectly in VR even though Steam says the game only supports mouse and keyboard. I could only get cockpit view like in DiRT, do you know if that's normal or did I miss a key to let me see the car from the outside (like you can in *dry cough* OutRun ;-)

VR mode is limited to cockpit I've read. Which is fine to me, I only ever play driving games in the cockpit. It's unnatural to be up in the chase drone 3rd person view to me.

Today's opinions about VR - quoting the most popular recent user reviews on Steam. Glad I'm not alone about the performance, which is ok with a 3090, buuut:
"It is running in VR.... But wow... I am shocked how bad the performance is... Got a RTX2080 and a ryzen 5800x, I can barely play on ultralow settings with not enough fps. And I tried it also on high settings just to see if it also looks THAT bad as in ultralow settings. YES, it does! Nvidia driver is the newest version with "F1 2022" support What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of ♥♥♥♥ from EA. unbelievable."
- and a long one:
"Well.. damn. This is the definition of a missed opportunity.
First the good. Handling seems fine, cars feel somewhat 'lighter' to drive - I am hoping this is reflective of real life F1 cars in 2022 - of course being a mere mortal I'll never know - but the handling is definitely different to last year. Audio is, on the whole, great - the individual car engines sound about right. (the music however is tragic).
Graphically, easily the best looking F1 game to date, raytracing looks excellent and (as least in 2D), performance so far feels fine. For reference, I'm running a 3080ti in 1440p, on an AMD 3070x with 32Gb RAM.
Pit stops FINALLY REMOVE THE WHEELS! F*** me, how many years has this taken?? Now you actually SEE the wheels being removed. Good job.
Regrettably.. that's pretty much it for the good. Now.. the bad.
Aside from the Champions Edition launch fiasco, where EA clearly forgot there is a world outside of the US (game launching 7 hours later than planned - but right on time if you were to use US time....).....
* VR. Probably one of the biggest changes to the game and should have been an epic experience almost made me throw up. I am a seasoned VR vet, I have experienced the worst VR has to throw at you and yet.. somehow F1 22 managed to almost defeat me.
CLEARLY VR was shoved in as a final decision - I firmly believe EA wanted to cash in on the PSVR2 launch - but apparently this is not going to happen - and I imagine it's because Sony told them to 'go away'.
VR is just not right. There are obvious frame pacing issues, when your head movement in the cockpit is a couple of frames behind what you actually see. It is horrific and simply not fit for purpose. The ironic thing, is once you're actually racing, it isn't quite as bad - but forget about making quick checks to your left and right - it is just awful."
Right now Hitman 3 has 68% positive ratings out of 3,600 - while F1 22 is at 60% out of 1,600 ratings. So Hitman 3 is the more popular game, lol, who'd have thought that?!

VR mode is limited to cockpit I've read. Which is fine to me, I only ever play driving games in the cockpit. It's unnatural to be up in the chase drone 3rd person view to me. Project Cars 1-3 have the chase/exterior view option - gives me better overview. I'm not much into sims, but love arcade ravers - also like good ol' Virtua Racing or Daytona So I almost never use the cockpit unless forced to do so. I don't mind it much in DiRT 1-2, but would like having the option to change views. Those were the days... That game is from 1992, even today this game feels like the old king - or some reference that cannot be beat. In 1992, Virtua Racing was so far ahead of any homePC or gaming console that it looked like some dream never being within reach. I guess I'm getting old, sigh... Old loves never die... If I can get some of that racing feeling back from F1 22, I'm in - but did work the first time at all It even say "real simulation" on the chassis - how awesome is that, lol. Given the choice of getting back into the original Sega experience as shown in the image, or getting back to F1 22 VR, I'd be in Sega's seat in seconds - but maybe that's just me :-)

I was heavily involved in Papyrus Nascar Racing games back in those days, ran a large racing league for some time and was a beta tester for Papyrus. Papyrus did have an Indycar racing game which was good. Then they had Grand Prix Legends which was the cream of the crop. But that was then, and now is now. Can't live in the past... If I had a choice I would stick with the present. Heck we did not have VR back then and I ain't gonna do any more gaming on a monitor. No matter how good the game. That is archaic man LOL.
